MAGNOLIA, Texas – After trailing by as much as nine strokes during the second round of action, NM State used steady play on the back nine to battle its way back on Tuesday at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club. The Aggies combined to score seven birdies across the final nine holes to enter Wednesday's championship round three under par and just two strokes off the lead.
Sophomore standout
Emma Bunch continued to prove why she is one of the top golfers in the country as she recorded a second-round score of 70 (-2) to enter the final 18 holes six under par – a number that puts her three shots clear of the field. After a double bogey on hole three, Bunch showed no signs of letting up as she managed five birdies across the ensuing 15 holes to end the day two below par. On the week, Bunch has submitted 10 birdies to mark the most of any player in the tournament.
While Bunch stands alone at the top of the leaderboard,
Alison Gastelum posted the low round of the day as she submitted a three-under to move eight spots up the individual leaderboard. With the movement, Gastelum enters the final day one under par and in a tie for fifth following an opening-round 74 (+2)
Kaylee Chen also improved with her second time through course as she posted a 71 (-3) to climb four spots and into a tie for ninth while sitting at one over par for the tournament. Meanwhile, Isa Laulhé carded a 76 (+2) to find herself in a tie for 11th represent the final score counting toward the Tuesday team total. Lastly,
Angela Garvin finished the day with an 82 (+10) and is currently tied for 32
nd.
NM State will begin its quest for a team title on Wednesday morning as
Angela Garvin tees off at 8 a.m. MT. Garvin will be followed by Laulhé (8:09 a.m.), Chen (8:18 a.m.), Gastelum (8:27 a.m.) and Bunch (8:36 a.m.).
