Aggies Take Second Loss of the Season to the Wildcats

NM State unable to hold off Arizona in the second half.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — NM State held Arizona scoreless through the first half but couldn't keep the Wildcats off the board late, falling 2-0 on Thursday night at the Soccer Athletic Complex.

The Aggies (1-2-0) matched Arizona's physicality in front of a season-high crowd of 783 and created early chances, including a shot on target from Meredith Scott in the 11th minute. Goalkeeper Valerie Guha anchored the defense with three saves, keeping the match even at the break.

Arizona finally broke through in the 50th minute and doubled its lead in the 75th. NM State continued to press, recording four shots and two on goal, including efforts from Scott and Daniela Portillo, but couldn't find the equalizer. Despite the setback, the Aggies showed stretches of strong defensive organization and will look to regroup as nonconference play continues.

The Aggies will take their first trip on Sunday as they look to continue their season against No. 5 USC in Los Angeles, California. The game against the Trojans is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. MT.
