TEMPE, Ariz. — NM State (1-5-0) fought hard but fell 1-0 to unbeaten Arizona State on Sunday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The Aggies put four shots on frame and kept the match within reach, but a first-half strike proved to be the difference.
The Sun Devils (4-0-1) broke through in the 23rd minute when Peyton Marcisz converted off a feed from Cameron Valladares. The Crimson and White pushed for an equalizer throughout the second half, with
Bianca Chacon and
Meredith Scott each forcing saves, while
Amaya Simoni-Walters added another shot on goal in the 16th minute.
Goalkeeper
Valerie Guha anchored the Aggie defense with four saves on 17 Sun Devil shots, while the back line held firm to limit ASU's chances after halftime. With this match, Guha now sits with three or more saves in all six games this season. The Aggies generated a pair of corner kicks and six total shots but couldn't find the tying goal before the final whistle.
The Aggies will travel back home and play host as they go toe-to-toe with the No. 17 nationally ranked Texas Tech Raiders on Thursday, September 4, at 7 p.m. MT in the NM State Soccer Athletic Complex.
