Aggies can't corral 'Roos on the road

NM State split its weekend road trip with 4-0 loss to UMKC on Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The NM State women's soccer team split its weekend road trip after a, 4-0, loss to Missouri-Kansas City on Sunday at the Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Fields.

"We really wanted to end our season very well, but we did have some bright spots in today's game," head coach Freddy Delgado said.

NM State was shocked in the opening minute of the match when Reighan Childers laced a shot into the back of the net just 34 seconds into the game for the 'Roos.

Holly Abdelkader had an opportunity to net the equalizer for NM State in the ninth minute, but was just wide left of the goal.

Ashley Martin, who recorded five of her 16 saves in the first half, did everything she could to keep the Aggies within striking distance. Her 16 saves on the day broke Katie Graul's record of 14 set in 2009 against Idaho State.

The Aggies would head into the locker room down 2-0 after Taylor Andrzejewski put one into the back of the net in the 21st minute for the Kangaroos.

NM State came out aggressive on both ends of the field to start the second half. After a Martin save, Audrey Chavez connected with Sabrina Ruiz who blasted a ball into the goal. Unfortunately, for Ruiz and the Aggies, it went straight into the arms of UMKC's Anna Lillig.

Six minutes later, Ruiz had another great opportunity when she beat Lillig to the ball and chipped it over her head. However, it was wide left to keep the game in favor of UMKC in the 57th minute.

Moments later, Sarina Stockton was given a yellow card on a challenge just outside the top right corner of the box. Luckily for her, UMKC's free kick was headed out to keep the match at 2-0.

The Aggies had another opportunity in the 73rd minute when Micaela Milavec's shot from the right side, but it was batted down by Lillig.

After a UMKC corner kick was deflected, a scrum ensued for the ball inside the box that led to the third goal of the game for the home team in the 80th minute. The 'Roos would tack on another goal before the game ended, 4-0.

"There was a point in the game where we really pressed them," Delgado said. "We really pressed them from the start of the second half and had some very good opportunities. When they got in that third goal on that play, it really killed any momentum that we were trying to generate."

NM State returns to action at 6 p.m. Mountain on Oct. 31 against UT Rio Grande Valley on the road for its final game of the regular season.
