LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The NM State equestrian team defeated West Texas A&M 17-2 in their first match of the spring semester on Friday at the New Mexico State Equestrian Center.
"I am pleased with the team's performance today," said head coach Robin Walter-Morris. "Our goal was to be as correct as possible, and it served us well. Everyone approached their ride with finesse and poise, securing the overall win. We will address necessary improvements in practice over the next two weeks as we prepare to take on a tough Georgia team on March 5th."
The Aggies began the day by capturing five points in equitation.
Karianna Knezevich scored a 74,
Chelsea Brady amassed a 49, Remington Wilkie garnered a 68,
Grace McMurry racked up an 83 and
Madison Brayman collected a 95 to earn each earn a point for NM State.
The home team also had obtained four points in equitation over fences as Knezevich garnered an 85,
Madison Brayman scored an 82, Sammy Perlman racked up a 74 and Wilkie had a 79 to garner points for the Aggies.
The Aggies amassed eight points in the western portion of the event with five points in horsemanship and three points in reining. First,
Rianna Storey,
Katlynn Crine and
Hallie Padilla each had a 71.5, while
Morgan Matzdorff collected a 72.0 and
Haylee Schoonover garnered a 72.5 to each earn a point for the NM State.
Storey,
Haley Newkirk and
Jaimie Story then scored 69.0, 70.5 and 70.0, respectively, to complete the Aggie victory.
NM State competes again on Mar. 5 as they host Georgia at 10:00 a.m. at the New Mexico State Equestrian Center.
