Men's Tennis Blanks Mesa CC in Dual Opener

The NM State men’s tennis team continued rolling from the fall season with a 7-0 sweep over Mesa CC in its dual opener.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men's tennis team didn't miss a beat after taking hiatus during the winter with a 7-0 sweep of Mesa Community College Friday afternoon at the NM State Tennis Center.
 
Christofer Goncalves and Luis Flores continued their dominance in doubles action with a 6-1 victory to open up the dual campaign. Sergi Espias and Enrique Asmar claimed the doubles point for NM State when they sent MCC's No. 3 doubles team home 6-3. Stijn de Haan and Mauri Benitez secured the sweep in a tightly contested victory at No. 2 doubles 7-6.
 
Once again, Goncalves was the first to finish during singles action. The Barquisimeto, Venezuela, product cruised past the Thunderbirds' No. 1 singles player 6-0, 6-3 for his 16th singles victory on the season and first in dual action.
 
De Haan was the next Aggie to win his flight, downing Kim Donghyun in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Asmar clinched the match moments later when he blasted his opponent at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-2. Benitez was the next to finish followed by Flores and Espias to complete the sweep for New Mexico State.
 
The Aggies now hit the road for 18-straight matches. It was head to Las Vegas next weekend for four matches at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV. First up for NM State will be the host, UNLV, on Friday, Feb. 3, followed by a neutral site matches against UC Riverside (Feb. 3), Weber State (Feb. 4) and Youngstown State (Feb. 5).
