The NM State men’s tennis team was tripped up in Albuquerque and fell to Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico, 4-1.

ALBUQUERQUE – The New Mexico State men's tennis team couldn't get past New Mexico at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center Saturday afternoon, falling to the Lobos 4-1.

The NM State No. 1 doubles pair of Christofer Goncalves and Luis Flores gave the Aggies (5-3) an early lead with a 6-4 victory over the Lobos' top doubles pair. UNM (6-5) knotted things up on court No. 2 before its No. 3 pair bested Sergi Espias and Enrique Asmar 6-3 to capture the doubles point.

New Mexico went up 2-0 when its No. 1 singles player bested Goncalves 6-4, 6-2. Asmar got a point back for the Aggies afterwards when he bested Sean Baklini 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

The lead expanded to 3-1 for the Lobos when Mauri Benitez was taken down 7-5, 6-2 on court No. 5. The match came to a close once Espias fell on court No. 4 to UNM's Lawrence Perrin.

The Aggies continue their rigorous road swing as they head Corpus Christi, Texas, for the HEB Invitational hosted by the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (March 3-4).
