de Haan Claims First Honor of the Season

NM State men’s tennis senior Stijn de Haan was named the WAC Singles Player of the Month after going 7-1 in September.

DENVER – Senior Stijn de Haan of the men's tennis team was named the Western Athletic Conference Singles Player of the Month on Tuesday by the league.

A native of Veldhoven, Netherlands, the 6-1 righty picked up the first honor of the year after going 7-1 in the month of September.

He first went 5-0 in the 2018 Aggie Invitational at home to kick off the season in route to his third-straight singles flight championship in the tournament. During that run, de Haan knocked out a pair of fellow teammates in the quarterfinal and finals.

The following week, the senior went 2-1 at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona. He opened the tournament with a three-set thriller over San Diego State's Arnaud Restifo 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 before having to retire due to injury in his quarterfinal match. However, de Haan was able to bounce back with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over BYU's Mateo Vereau.

New Mexico State will have about two more weeks of rest to train and prepare for ITA Mountain Regional Championships (Oct. 16-19) in Las Vegas, Nev., hosted by UNLV.
