Men's Tennis Heads Home Atop WAC Standings

The NM State men’s tennis team head back home after a week of matches atop the WAC standings with a sweep of Seattle U Saturday.

KANSAS CITY – The New Mexico State men's tennis team heads back from the first Western Athletic Conference cluster atop the standings after sweeping Seattle u Saturday afternoon 7-0 at the Plaza Tennis Center.
 
The NM State (12-6, 3-0 WAC) No. 2 doubles team of Stijn de Haan and Mauri Benitez dominated their match, blanking their counterparts from Seattle U (7-12, 0-3 WAC) before Enrique Asmar and Louis Menard clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 victory on court No. 3.
 
Benitez captured the first singles victory for the Aggies on court No. 5, taking down Jeremiah Kalmus from Seattle U 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Louis Menard made it a 3-0 edge for NM State not too long after with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
 
Christofer Goncalves sealed the victory for New Mexico State with his 6-1, 6-2 beating of Trenton Nield at the top singles position. Asmar was the next Aggie to register a win on court No. 4 followed by Espias and de Haan to complete the sweep.
 
The Aggies will get a little over a week's worth of rest and train before heading to the Windy City to wrap up WAC play and the regular-season. First up for NM State will be UMKC on Friday, April 13, for a 2 p.m. (MT) first serve before completing WAC play against Grand Canyon at 9 a.m. on Sat., April 14. New Mexico State will stay and extra day in Chicago as it concludes the regular-season against             DePaul on Sunday, April 15, at noon.
