@NMStateBaseball Invades Aggiequerque for Battle of I-25 Clash

NM State baseball heads to Albuquerque, N.M. for the first Battle of I-25 matchup of the season on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. MT.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State baseball team heads north to take on Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico at 6:30 p.m. MT on Tuesday, April 10. This is the first of three clashes between the Aggies and Lobos during the 2018 season.

LOOKING AT THE LOBOS
Heading into the midweek tilt, New Mexico holds a 12-17-1 overall record. The Lobos are on a five-game losing streak, most recently having been swept at home by Fresno State.
 
At the plate, UNM has three regular starters batting above .300. The team is led by Hayden Schilling who is batting .368 with a team-high 16 RBI, .484 slugging percentage and .459 on-base percentage. Danny Collier adds a .308 batting average and leads the team with seven stolen bases.
 
The pitching staff for the Lobos has combined for a 6.01 ERA and held opponents to a .292 batting average. UNM has averaged 8.9 strikeouts per nine innings and has recorded 2.2 strikeouts per walk. Through 269.1 innings pitcher, the Lobos have allowed 96 extra-base hits, including 25 home runs.

Eight weeks into the 2018 season the NM State baseball team currently ranks in the top-20 in 10 different categories across the NCAA, including seven within the top-10:

Individually the Aggies also have four players checking in the top-25 in five different categories. On the mound Kyle Bradish sits 12th in strikeouts (71) and 23rd in hits allowed per nine innings (5.29), while Jonathan Groff ranks 8th in the country in victories (6). Catcher Mason Fishback ranks 21st in doubles (13) and Trey Stine comes in at 23rd in on-base percentage (.496).
 
LAST TIME OUT
NM State recently wrapped up its first Western Athletic Conference series on the road. The team traveled to take on CSU Bakersfield, April 6-8. The Aggies opened game one for its first road series in Western Athletic Conference play against CSU Bakersfield on Friday night at Hardt Field.
 
NM State avoided a late scare from the Roadrunners and expanded their lead with five runs in the final two innings en route to a 9-3 victory. Kyle Bradish (4-1) earned the win with 6.0 innings pitched and six strikeouts. At the plate, NM State outhit CSUB 11-7 and was led by Joey Ortiz who had one home run and five runs batted in.
 
Game two of the three-game series took place on Saturday night. The Aggies broke a scoreless tie with a five-run sixth inning and held on to the lead taking down the Roadrunners 9-3. Jonathan Groff (6-2) earned the win after tossing 8.0 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits. The Aggies were led at the dish by Caleb Henderson and Trey Stine who each went 3-for-4 and combined for six RBI.
 
Early production from the Aggies in the series finale saw five runs in the opening two innings lead the team to a 5-2 victory and series sweep of the Roadrunners. Alex Pinedo (3-1) earned the win after allowing just two hits and one run through 5.0 innings pitched. Logan Bottrell led the Aggies at the plate going 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Following the rivalry game, New Mexico State returns home to host Western Athletic Conference opponent Chicago State in a weekend series at Presley Askew Field, April 13-15.
