@NMStateBaseball Completes Series Sweep Over UNM with 4-3 Win

The Aggie baseball team won its fifth-straight win on Tuesday with a 4-3 win over New Mexico.

Box Score ALBUQUERQUE – A stolen base from Logan Ehnes with two outs in the top of the seventh, who eventually scored the game-winning run, gave the New Mexico State baseball team the 4-3 victory over Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico Tuesday night at Santa Ana Star Field.

The win gave NM State (33-16) its first-ever three-game sweep of the Lobos (16-31-1) in a single-season. Aggies previously had two-game sweeps of UNM in 2011 and 1995. It was also the fifth-consecutive win for NM State.

Despite getting a runner in scoring position to start the game thanks to some mistakes from the Lobos, NM State couldn't take advantage. That gave way to New Mexico in its home half of the frame after a two-out RBI single from Jeff Deimling scored Connor Mang – who ripped a double down the first-base line prior.

However, the Aggies answered right back in the next frame with a pair of runs. Back-to-back singles from Mason Fishback and Marcus Still followed by a fielder's choice from Joey Ortiz put runners on the corners for David Bellamy – who roped a two-run triple down the right-field line to score Ortiz and Fishback for the 2-1 lead.

A 1-2-3 inning for UNM's Gasser, who wound up with the loss, set the stage for the game-tying run on a double to right-center from Deimling once again and made it 2-2. Both teams threatened with runners in scoring position in the fourth, but nothing came to fruition for either side.

Trey Stine gave NM State a 3-2 lead when the senior unloaded on a 3-2 fastball in the leadoff spot in the fifth. Aggie starter Justin Dehn tossed another scoreless inning in the sixth with the 3-2 lead before giving way to Matthew Perea. The righty Dehn gave up just two earned on six hits with five strikeouts for his fifth win of the season.

Perea, Wyatt Kelly and Alvaro Castillo combined to give up just one hit in relief of Dehn and gained an insurance run in the seventh thanks to the Ehnes.

New Mexico didn't go down without a fight, however, in its final three outs of the night. With two outs remaining in the game, Justin Watari doubled down the third-base line before standing 90 feet away from home plate on a wild pitch from Brock Whittlesey. Watari wound up scoring and got within 4-3 of the Aggies after Dan Herrera's grounder to second.

The Lobos got the tying run in scoring position after Mang tallied a two-out single and pinch-runner Phill Sikes reached second on a wild pitch.  However, a cool-headed Whittlesey was able to get Deimling to swing on an outside pitch to clinch the sweep of UNM and record the four-out save for his eighth stop of the season.

Whittlesey's eight saves is just one shy of tying the single-season record, which is held by Ruger Rodriguez (2017) and Scott Koffman (2012). Offensively, senior Mason Fishback went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Bellamy picked up two RBI.

New Mexico State remains on the road as it travels to the Pacific Northwest for a three-game series against Gonzaga. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. (MT) on Friday.
