White Tops Crimson in Inter-Squad Meet

White comes out on top in annual Crimson and White meet.

LAS CRUCES, N.M – The New Mexico State swimming and diving team held its annual Crimson and White meet on Wednesday afternoon with White coming out victorious in the inter-squad meet.

"Today was a great experience but us coaches didn't really set them up for success," said head coach Rick Pratt. "They had to swim three races in less than an hour, so come the third one they were really hanging in tough there. I thought there were some impressive swims. Hanna McGowan really stood out, she looks awesome and is on fire. All of our seniors, you could tell who the veterans were, they kind of knew how to handle today. But our freshman did well also. Anabel Ivanov was really good and Lauren Hemburrow really impressed me."

The competition started off with senior MacKinna Hauff of the Crimson side outdueling White's Sheridan Decker on the 1m board.

The 200 Medley relay was won by White's team of Lanie McAlpin, Ashley Reynolds, Reagan Nentwich and Anabelle Ivanov.

In the 500 Free, Katherine Harston of the Crimson side outlasted her opponents and finished in first in the days longest race.

The 100 Free saw freshman Ivanov of the White team capture first place with a time of

In the 200 IM, reigning Western Athletic Conference 100 and 200 Breast champion McGowan took first for the Crimson team.

The 100 Fly was captured by Hemburrow of the White squad.

White also captured the 50 Free thanks to senior Ruby Rodriguez who outsprinted her opponents.

In the 100 Back, White kept the momentum with another win from Ivanov, her second win of the day.

White would then capture the next event as well getting a victory from Grace Laporte in the 200 Free.

McGowan then captured her second win of the day for the Crimson side in the 100 breast while Crimson also took the 200 Free relay thanks to Makena Sutherland, freshman Makenzie Baird, Aimee Hatfield and freshman Neza Kocijan.

"It's still really early in the season but we have three meets coming up so we have to be better moving forward but this was a good gauge of where we are right now and I'm excited to keep going," Pratt added.

The Aggies are back in action when they host Liberty in a two-day meet to open the season starting Friday, Oct. 5, at 6 p.m. (MT) with day two getting underway on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 11 a.m. As always, entry to all events at the NM State Swimming and Diving Complex is free for all fans.
