Aggies Prepare for First Battle of 1-25 in 2023

| By:

Tuesday's game will be the first of four between NM State and New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Aggies. Lobos. Under the lights. The settings are perfect for a Tuesday night thriller in the Duke City as NM State makes its first of two trips to Albuquerque. After the Lobos spend two nights in Las Cruces (April 4; April 18), the Aggies will make one final trip north on May 2. NM State is looking to bounce back after losing all four contests to New Mexico during the 2022 campaign.

Albuquerque native Darius Garcia will get the ball for NM State in a trip to his hometown. Last week, Garcia earned the win in the Aggies' 21-3 victory over Ottawa (Ariz.) and Tuesday will be his first start away from Presley Askew Field this season.

Leading Off
  • Tuesday's contest will be the first of four midweek meetings this season between NM State and New Mexico. The Lobos won all four contests last season and hold a 164-91 advantage in the Rio Grande Rivalry.
  • Albuquerque native Darius Garcia will get the start in his hometown on Tuesday. Garcia is tied for the team lead in wins and posts a 4.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the season.
  • The Lobos will put RHP Benjamin Baker-Livingston on the bump Tuesday night. Baker-Livingston's last start came on May 17, 2022, also against NM State, where he went 5.0 innings, fanning four and allowing just four hits.
  • The Aggies bumped its team batting average 21 points in the walloping of OUAZ. NM State exploded for 19 hits in the effort.
  • Kevin Jimenez doubled in NM State's Saturday win at Utah Tech, moving into third in school history with 48 career two-baggers.
  • Among active Division I players, Jimenez ranks eighth with 48 doubles and eleventh with 116 walks. Jimenez also currently sits at 198 career hits.
  • In last Tuesday's win against OUAZ, Keith Jones II and Nick Gore both picked up their first multi-home run games for NM State

Quick Hits

CARVE 'EM UP

On Saturday against Utah Tech, Pablo Cortes recorded a career-high eight strikeouts. On Sunday, Hayden Johns recorded career-long 2.1 innings out of the bullpen while fanning a career-high four hitters.

THE NAME'S NAMIE

Through just ten games as a true freshman, Mitch Namie is hitting a team-best .324 and has four multi-hit games. Namie's consistency has earned him a spot as NM State's every day left fielder.

TABLE FOR TEN, PLEASE

Ten different players have started in the seven and eight holes of the NM State lineup this season.

Starts by Spot in the Lineup

SEVENTH: Cal Villareal 4, Karl Koerper 3, Keith Jones II and Nick Gore 2, Mitch Namie, Kevin Jimenez, Christian Perez, Nolan Funke, Hunter Antillon, and Damone Hale each have 1.

EIGHTH: Nick Gore and Hunter Antillon 3, Karl Koerper, Christian Perez, and Mitch Namie all have 2, while Xaige Lancaster, Nolan Funke, Cal Villareal, Brant Voth, and Romeo Ballesteros each have made one start.

KEEP UP WITH THE JONES'

Jones II and Nick Gore both had multi-home run nights against the Spirit - Something an Aggie hadn't done since April 10, 2022 (Tommy Tabak vs. Sacramento State)

LIGHT TOWER POWER

Powered by the four home runs between Jones II and Gore, NM State launched seven home runs in the midweek tilt against OUAZ. The seven home run effort was the most by any team in the WAC this season and is tied for the second-highest total in a Division I game this season.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION

In the victory over OUAZ, NM State exploded for 23 runs, more than half of the runs scored over the first 13 games of the season (42).
