LAS CRUCES, N.M. - For the first time since the semifinals of the 2022 WAC Tournament, NM State and Sacramento State will meet on the baseball diamond. The Hornets will travel to Las Cruces for three games over the weekend, beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m. MT.
NM State got back in the win column on Tuesday, snapping a four-game skid. The Aggies defeated OUAZ 12-6 behind home runs from
Kevin Jimenez and
Nolan Funke. This weekend,
Treyjen Meza,
Noah Estrella, and
Tyler Hoeft are set to toe the rubber for NM State as the Aggies square off with the conference foe.
News and Notes
WELCOME TO THE SHOW
On Thursday evening, NM State alum Joey Ortiz will make his Major League debut in Detroit. Ortiz is slated to start at second base for the Orioles, joining his Aggie teammate from 2017 and '18, Kyle Bradish. When Ortiz steps on the diamond, he'll be the seventh player in NM State history to make his MLB debut.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
A traditional powerhouse in the WAC, Sacramento State is having a down year by their standards. The Hornets sit at one game above .500 (21-20) on the season and have won just seven games in conference play to this point. Sacramento State dropped two of three games to Seattle U last weekend before picking up a 12-8 win over Nevada on Tuesday.
BACK IN THE WIN COLUMN
After dropping four straight contests, the Aggies got back to their winning ways on Tuesday morning with a 12-6 win over OUAZ. The Aggies got a career-high five RBI from
Kevin Jimenez, including a grand slam.
LAST MEETING
The Aggies ended Sacramento State's season in 2022 in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament.
Cade Swenson allowed just one run over 4.0 innings of work in his start. NM State got five extra base hits in the ballgame, including doubles from
Logan Gallina,
Preston Godfrey, and the eventual WAC Tournament MVP
Cal Villareal.
Following the 7-3 win over Sacramento State, NM State defeated Abilene Christian 7-1 in the championship game to secure the 2022 WAC Tournament championship.
HOW SWEEP IT IS
With a weekend sweep over Stephen F. Austin, the defending WAC Champions are red-hot once again. The sweep marked the first for NM State since February 24-27, 2022 over Oakland. When looking for a conference sweep, the Aggies had not done so since March 17-19 when NM State took all four games from Northern Colorado.
WALK IT OFF
After the Aggies had not ended a game with a walk-off in over a year,
Damone Hale and
Preston Godfrey ended back-to-back games against Stephen F. Austin with a walk-off. On Friday, a three-run error after a fly ball by Hale ended the ballgame in run-rule fashion before giving way to Godfrey's two-run walk-off home run in the ninth inning on Saturday.
KRUSH IT KEV
With eight home runs this season,
Kevin Jimenez has set a new career-high in long balls. The senior second baseman leads NM State in hits (36), runs batted in (24), doubles (6), home runs (7), and total bases (63).
RUN IT UP
With 39 runs scored against Stephen F. Austin, NM State set a new season-high with runs scored in a series. NM State has also scored 10+ runs in three consecutive games for the first time since March. 5, 6, and 11, 2022 against Prairie View A&M and Seattle U.
