KANSAS CITY – The New Mexico State men's tennis team rolled past a short-handed Chicago State team Friday evening at the Plaza Tennis Center 6-1.
Â
With the Cougars (5-14, 0-2 WAC) down a doubles pair, NM State (11-6, 2-0 WAC) opened the match with a 1-0 edge in doubles play before the No. 2 Aggies team of
Stijn de Haan and
Mauri Benitez took down their counterparts from Chicago State 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.
Â
Like doubles, CSU couldn't field players at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots – which gave New Mexico State an early 3-0 lead before singles play even began. De Haan continued his dominant play of late, sending Rohan Wattley packing 6-0, 6-4 to clinch the match.
Â
Sergi Espias made it 5-0 in favor of the Aggies shortly thereafter with a 6-3, 6-2 win over George Botha on court No. 3. The Cougars picked up their lone point at No. 4 singles when
Enrique Asmar was bested in a back-and-forth match that led to his demise 6-4, 1-6,1Â 0-4.
Christofer Goncalves wrapped match up for NM State with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the top singles slot.
Â
New Mexico State will wrap up the first Western Athletic Conference cluster Saturday, March 31, with a 1 p.m. (MT) contest against Seattle U.
