HOMEWOOD, Ill. – The New Mexico State men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker Friday afternoon to UMKC, 4-3, at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club.
 
The Aggie (12-7, 3-1 WAC) opponents took an early jump in doubles action when Christofer Goncalves and Luis Flores were bested 6-1. Enrique Asmar and Louis Menard tied things up shortly thereafter with a tight 7-5 victory against their counterparts on court No. 3 before UMKC captured the doubles point with a 7-5 win on court No. 2.
 
Benitez made quick work in singles action against Hunter Clark, 6-2, 6-2 – which tied the match up at 1-1. The Roos (9-9, 4-0 WAC) went back up 2-1 when Asmar was taken down 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
 
The match was once again tied, this time at 2-2, after the freshman Menard dismantled Anil Patel 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 slot. Playing at the No. 2 position, Stijn de Haan dropped a tightly contested first set 7-6 (7-2) before dropping the second set 6-3. UMKC picked up the win on court No. 3 after Sergi Espias was defeated 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) despite him battling Tom Kruse valiantly in the second set.
 
Goncalves finished his match right after the completion of the clinching match for UMKC when he took down Airam Castellano 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
 
New Mexico State looks to bounce back on Saturday, April 14, at 9 a.m. (MT) when it takes on Grand Canyon before facing off against DePaul on Sunday.
