Women's Tennis Finishes Strong in Season-Opener

The NM State women’s tennis team finished strong at the 2018 Aggie Invitational winning both the singles and doubles draw.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season-opener on Sunday with several wins, including Chloe Gavino's White singles championship and the doubles championship victory from Lindsay Harlas and Harsha Challa.

The third and final day of action saw the duo of Harlas and Challa battle back to force a tiebreaker before claiming the doubles title 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 against UTEP's Kirsten Prelle and Vanessa Valdez. In the third-place match, Gavi Kalaga and Rebecca Keijzerwaard did their best to fend off UNM's pair of Yuelin Chen and Natasha Munday but ultimately fell 5-7, 6-1, 10-4.

In the back draw of doubles action, Quinty Janssen and Clara Rizea edged out teammates Yadira Rubio and Neus Torregrosa 3-6, 6-2, 11-9 for fifth-place while the team of Gavino and Nadia Justiniano fell 6-4, 6-4.

Keijzerwaard and Harlas were three games in before ending the match in favor of Keijzerwaard 2-1 via retire. Kalaga's match ended the tournament with both NM State and UTEP players lining the court to cheer her on as she bested UTEP's Valdez 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 for the consolation title in the Crimson draw. Challa's match against UNM's Ruth Copas was a hard-fought contest that saw the transfer prevail 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.

Gavino, a freshman out of Tucson, Ariz., got the best of Janssen in the White singles championship match 6-4, 6-4 while Rizea defeated UTEP's Rine Nozaki 6-2, 6-0 for third-place in that draw.

The Aggies now get a few weeks off before they head to Las Vegas, Nev., for the ITA Mountain Regional Championships (Oct. 10-14), hosted by UNLV.
