LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The NM State men's tennis team gave its seniors a great sendoff on Saturday, defeating Western New Mexico 6-1.
Â
The Mustangs (13-9, 4-0 RMAC) gave NM State a scare at the start of the match, taking both doubles matches on courts No. 1 and No. 3.
Â
However, the Aggies (10-9, 4-1 WAC) dominated WNMU in singles play with a sweep on all six courts.
Â
Mauri Benitez put NM State on the board first with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court No. 5. Senior
Liam Goldberg picked up his final win at the NMSU Tennis Center with 6-0, 6-4 defeat of Vladimir Gnilozubov at No. 3 singles.
Â
Christofer Goncalves sent off WNMU's Tristian Da Lio 6-1, 6-5 at No. 2 singles, setting up the match-clinching win for senior
Strahinja Trecakov.
Â
Leading one set over Jean Laurent Pageault, Trecakov finished with a victory in his last match at the NMSU Tennis Center just like Goldberg, 6-3, 6-5.
Â
Enrique Asmar and
Stijn de Haan completed the singles sweep of WNMU soon after as the Aggies complete the regular season 10-9 overall.
Â
NM State now awaits the bracket for the Western Athletic Championships, which will be head in Brownsville, Texas, from April 29-May 1 and is hosted by UT Rio Grande Valley.
