Joey Ortiz established himself as one of the most talented players in NM State baseball history during his three-year career with the Aggies. A dynamic infielder, Ortiz was a three-year starter who capped his collegiate career with a stellar junior season in 2019, hitting an incredible .422 with 8 home runs, 84 RBIs and 43 extra-base hits. That year, he broke NM State's single-season records for hits and triples while also becoming the program's all-time leader in career triples.

Following his standout junior campaign, Ortiz was selected by the Baltimore Orioles with the first pick in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB Draft. After progressing through the minor leagues, Ortiz made his MLB debut on April 27, 2023, and has since completed his third season in the big leagues, now playing as an infielder for the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2025, Ortiz served as the starting shortstop for a Brewers team that won an MLB-best 97 games to win the NL Central and earn the top seed in the 2025 MLB Postseason. During the year, Ortiz appeared in 149 games and tallied 45 RBIs and seven home runs.

Ortiz is married to Iliana Ortiz and continues to represent NM State proudly as he builds his career at the highest level of baseball.
